TO YOU ASPIRING ARTISTS...FROM JOE MADUREIRA
Here's some of the most amazing and invaluable advice you'll most-likely ever get from one of my good colleagues and legends in comics/gaming, creator JOE MADUREIRA. It's what i've been preaching to you aspiring artists since i arrived on DA, but i think his POV says it perfectly:
*WARNING: SOME MATURE LANGUAGE*
"DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST?
Or a successful WORKING PROFESSIONAL?
Believe it or not there is a difference. I'm not usually a soapbox type guy, I don't like instructing people, and I think I'm a terrible teacher. But hey, it's Friday and I'm in a strange mood. So here goes:
I've noticed that a good number of my fans happen to be aspiring artists themselves. This is for all you guys. I get asked constantly: "Where should I go to school?" "What classes should I take?" "What should I study for anatomy?" "What pencils and paper do you use?" "Should I be working digitally now instead of traditionally?" "How do I fix my poses? Learn composition? Perspective?" "When

Draw
Today, im gonna draw like there is no tomorrow. Im anxious to do the best stuff of my life today, and im not gonna let any blocks or lack of inspiration get in my way because at the end of the day, if i dont do what i see in my minds eye, who's gonna do it?
This is the new mantra that hangs on my wall above my desk, LOVE!

How To Improve Your Art
"How do I improve my art work?" is one of the most asked questions in art related forums, mainly regarding drawing and painting in any media. Because the question is recurring so often, I wrote the following tips that I still copy-paste in various threads.
You can apply these universal strategies not just to traditional and digital painting media, but most of them even to photography and collage.
- Look at pictures by artists you admire, and try to figure out things. How do they handle light and color? What edges are sharp, and what edges are soft? Why do they use that particular color there? What technique did they use? How did they work? The more you look at work of others, the more different kinds of styles and techniques you will see.
- Learn from the masters. Copy works you adore. Not for imitating the artist or showcasing your copy, but for the sake of learning. Don't be shy, ask your favorite artist everything you want to know, such as "What paper do you draw on?", or "How do yo

Tip for Today: When to give up?
Never give up just because you don't think you're good enough. We've all had our doubts in life. Successful people do not give up easily. We must prepare and prepare again, try your very hardest and then about 50% more that you didn't know you had consistently, then keep going twice as long as you ever thought you would or could. Look for more knowledge and try again.
Favorite this if you're with me! Have an awesome Friday.
Sending positive vibes to you all.

I have never been a big believer in New Year's Resolution or rarely set goals for myself. But this year, I will be 30 years old, graduated from college four years ago with an art degree, but still work at a non-art job. I have done some nickel-and-dime freelance work, took some painting courses here-and-there, met some new people working in a highly competitive art industry. Until recently, about a week ago with the time off from my day job that I really took some thought on what I need to do have actually pursue my dreams of working on some cool illustrations, concept art, and posters, etc. I really want to continue to master my craft. So I took the first leap of faith right before the new year and paid for the self-taught Art of Caricature course at Schoolism. Which is a first, risky step into the right direction; study under great talent. But I also must increase business skills so I can actually survive and make a living being an artist, also so I won't let my clients or others walk over me. I actually plan on taking two more courses this year online, which would be very expensive but that is the risk I must take. So plainly my new year's resolutions are:

  • Make lots of art
  • Make more friends who share a similar (or more passion in art) locally
  • Design a professional portfolio
  • Understand and be better with finances
  • Exercise and diet regularly

So that is the bottom line for 2015. Also I been going to these conventions like crazy for the last five years. I am going to cut back and most likely just hit up San Diego Comic Con this summer, so I won't let myself get distracted from actual art-making.

I ain't gon lie... I desperate as hell from this point out.
